Angelica

Though few have heard of it, angelica is used throughout the food industry as a sweet, spicy flavoring agent. Closely related to Dong Quai, a respected tonic in traditional Chinese medicine, Angelica is often used as a labor aid to delay birthing and to relieve menstrual cramps. As an African herb that made it over to Europe in the 16th century, Angelica was used extensively for treating the plague, and its essential oil was renowned for its anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and stimulant properties. Today, many people drink it in their teas to calm nervous stomachs and fight off fevers and congestion.
